Tohoku Kogei Seisakusho is pleased to announce that, beginning December 2025, specially designed products featuring Tamamushi Lacquerware—a traditional craft designated by Miyagi Prefecture—have been launched at the Lucasfilm Ltd. company store in the United States.
The following three items were produced based on official design requests from Lucasfilm:
- Tamamushi Lacquer “Ensō × Yoda” Design Item
- Tamamushi Lacquer “Death Star” Design Item
- Tamamushi Lacquer Ballpoint Pen with Lucasfilm Logo
■Background of the Development
As part of its efforts to bring Miyagi Prefecture–designated traditional craft Tamamushi Lacquerware to global audiences,
Tohoku Kogei Seisakusho conducted multiple business meetings with Lucasfilm starting in the spring of 2025.
The team visited Lucasfilm’s headquarters in San Francisco and worked closely with the Lucasfilm team to jointly develop the designs.
This initiative was made possible through the JETRO “Japan Export Nation Consortium” Hands-on Support Program, with significant assistance from Concierge and Expert Partner, whose support enabled smooth coordination and development between Japan and the United States.
As a result of these efforts, the products have now been officially adopted for sale at Lucasfilm’s headquarters store.

■From Tohoku to the World — A New Challenge for Tamamushi Lacquerware
Tohoku Kogei Seisakusho (Sendai, Miyagi), custodian of the traditional craft Tamamushi Lacquerware, launched the design collaboration project “Deco Pro” in celebration of its 90th anniversary, looking ahead to its 100th anniversary in 2033.

This project aims to create new value by collaborating with designers and companies from Japan and abroad, integrating traditional craftsmanship with regional cultures.
Centered on the theme of co-creation inspired by history, Deco Pro develops products that combine the cultural heritage of its partners with the techniques of Tohoku Kogei.
The project goes beyond ordinary design collaboration by emphasizing deep cultural understanding and mutual respect, with the goal of passing traditional craftsmanship to future generations while introducing new forms of expression to the world.
The defining characteristic of Tamamushi Lacquerware—its iridescent color variations created by changing light—harmonizes naturally with the Star Wars universe, known for its interplay of light and shadow.
This unique feature is showcased prominently in the specially designed items developed for this collaboration.
