Tamamushi lacquerware, a #Miyagi, Sendai-born craft known for brilliant luster and vivid colors, has suffered a crisis in recent years. Its ornamental image and the maintenance required made it difficult to use in daily life; the Great East Japan Earthquake also drastically worsened sales. Now 3rd-generation owner SAURA Yasuhiro, whose Tohoku Kogei Co., Ltd. has made the lacquerware locally since 1933, puts new shine on the tradition. He developed a protective nanocomposite coating that makes it durable enough for the dishwasher, expanding its potential and creating goods for today’s lifestyle.
